Pardon me bloggers as I vent. Last night the Republican Central Committee voted on two positions, one to fill the vacancy of Tiffin Councilwoman At-Large Wilma Klopp, and the other to fill the vacancy of William Crist who dropped out of the race for Seneca County Commissioner against incumbent Democratic Commissioner Ben Nutter and Independent Terry Love.
Tyler Shuff was elected to fill Klopp’s seat until Dec. 31, 2009. Holly Stacy was elected to run as commissioner.
Now here is the kicker…How many seats are currently on the Republican Central Committee? 52. How many members of the Republican Central Committee showed up to vote? About half the members!
“Shuff, a salesman at Tiffin Ford, took eight of the 12 votes, with Charles “Buster” Ardner the next closest with two votes. Shuff said he was stunned to win it on the first round because he was competing against five other candidates.”
Shuff may have been stunned to win, but I am stunned that so few representatives bothered to show up. This Seneca County Blog editor would like to thank all those people of committee who clearly take their responsibilities so cavalierly. This type of absenteeism is not the exception, it is the rule. How can we get quality people to run for office, if the central committee members are too lame to show up to vote??
From the A-T

Don’t they require a quorum in order to conduct business?
You would think so, wouldn’t you? But they don’t. Isn’t that amazing!
The malaise is not unique to the local Republicans, I can sadly assure you.
One other thing you may have overlooked. I would bet that ONLY Tiffin members of the RCC/REC voted on the Klopp-Shuff position. Double-check the number who voted for the commissioner’s position, and I’ll bet you find that more than 12 voted for that position. You might want to check with Dave Koehl to be sure before you go elephant huntin’!
I had already put in for that information. Everytime I have asked, less than half ever show up. My representative has not attended since last fall!
WHY should the Republicans bother to show-up, when they have the $$$$ and they have party unity and vote like lemmings? No need to earn anythng, when they already OWN the county?
Now, now Anonymous. Both parties have plenty of millionaires. Find me a senator in either party that is not loaded. Both parties have people who vote straight party ticket. I for one do not. And don’t think there is party unity either. I am a moderate, and don’t like to see any party overrun with extremists.
I vote both ways too, but…. take a trip around the block sometime and see what’s out there! The political machinery consists of more than “senators.”
I always thought we should have a Common Sense Party.
That would be better than a Common Cents Party.
Only 13 Republican committee members can vote for City Council seat and 12 voted. Most of the missing committee members were from Fostoria. Councilman Shuff did excellent with his interview, I was impressed. He was the right choice for this position. All voting was fair and was by book. Congratulation Councilman Shuff.
Thanks

Engle - yes only 13 can vote for council. And as usual many, many members of the Republican Committee were absent. I am not making a statement about the choices, I am making a statement about people who choose to run for a position on central committee and do not show up for meetings. You might be surprised to know some meetings only have five members in attendance. And because of the current rules in place, five represents a “quorum”. Even two members would be able to conduct business, out of 52. That is ridiculous.
Scout - you know the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt well it can be written that complacency breeds contempt also.
They also voted on a County Commissioner candidate. How many were present to vote on that? Last time I checked half of Fostoria was in Seneca County. Why were those members absent?
Tuesday is a baaaddd night to schedule a meeting. I mean come on The Moment of Truth Season Finale, Hell’s Kitchen Season Finale, 30 Days Season Finale, and a whole host of other t.v. shows were on that night……can’t be in two places at once…..
With the invention of recording TV shows via tape, TiVo or then watching on internet the next day, a person can now attend a meeting that actually will affect their lives. I guess making a responsible decision comes after knowing, Who shot JR? Who is sleeping with whom and so on….
Talking with some of my relatives from Fostoria they feel that Tiffin is the center of the universe for Seneca County and that any town or township really has no say on any subject.
I see Stacy and Huss bringing this County together for the betterment of all, just not Tiffin.
jonny - I agree. I live out in the county, and often am frustrated that folks in Tiffin at times leave all the rest of us out. I know another candidate who is working for the betterment of all, Derek DeVine.
Jonny - I agree also but it is hard to record all of those at the same time and not sit at home and channel surf between them.
I am all about bringing the whole county together and hope that the Stacy, Huss and DeVine positions work out. Not to beat a dead horse but we had a chance to do that for the Sheriff’s Office but that didn’t work out so well…..
get - *sigh*
