Derek DeVine Press Release hot off the SCB email.

Derek W. DeVine of Tiffin announces that he has filed his petitions with the Board of Elections for the position of Seneca County Prosecutor in the 2008 general election.  He is running as an independent.

DeVine practices law at Lange & DeVine Law Offices, LLC in Tiffin with his wife, Anne Lange and her father, Michael Lange.  He was formerly an associate with the law office of Supance & Howard in Tiffin, and prior to that was an Assistant Seneca County Prosecutor from June 1994 through December, 1999.

DeVine indicates that his platform is two-fold:  more efficient criminal prosecution and competent civil representation of the county.  DeVine has stated that he is running full time for the position and that he will deliver full service.  “I would have represented the county commissioners in the courthouse litigation and not farmed out that work.  That mistake has cost Seneca County over $125,000 in legal fees since last July and the bill only grows higher as the litigation continues.”

DeVine has significant legal experience including criminal, civil, and municipal law.  He has served as special prosecutor for Wyandot County, Sandusky County, the City of Findlay, the City of Upper Sandusky, and the Village of McComb.  He has served as solicitor for Bloomville, Green Springs, and Bettsville during his career.  “My prior experience in the prosecutor’s office as well as my private practice representing clients in various legal situations provides me with the skills to effectively prosecute crime and represent our county officials.  My significant trial experience includes both civil and criminal cases.”

  1. Go Derek Go!

  2. Full Time & Full Service……Got my vote!!!!

  3. What can we do to help elect this guy!

  4. As for my family and me, our vote is simply DeVINE !

  5. Hotty: Of course, Vote. Beyond that, tell all your friends.

  6. Do you think Mr. Egbert will break down and have a website paid for by his re-election committee?

  7. That’s a BIG question! Only Joooooonier knows, for certain, what he will do.

  8. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free off the public teet?

  9. I thought maybe we could shame him into it.

  10. Joe: When I was farm’n my teacher spelt it: “TEAT” It was those hangy-down things on the utter side ‘a da cow.

  11. You get the picture anyhow…

  12. That’s “udderly” ridiculous!

  13. I was suggesting, can we dontate time, money, or anything else to get Joonier outa there. What does he need? Where do we call? Who do we see?

  14. You should contact Susan Hering Howard. She is listed as the treasurer for the committee to elect DeVine, 174 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH.

  15. If anyone is interested in helping, the contact information is on his website, too.

I hope Stacy and Huss get websites up!

  16. WHO do I make the check out to? ” Susan Hering Howard, Treas.”???

  17. I believe a check is made out to the treasurer of the campaign, in this case Susan, just as you posted.

  18. So, what IS the size of the current Prosecutor’s departmental pay-out for salaries? Am I to believe the numbers that are being bandied-about?

  19. The information is available from Larry Biedelschies, your friendly neighborhood Seneca County Auditor. It’s public record.

  20. I am guessing a comparison is in the works.

  21. Word on the street is that WILD SALARY NUMBERS are out there! No wonder tax-dollars are being stretched to the limit - and beyond!

  22. If we’re paying that MUCH for Prosecution, tell me how much we provide for Defense.

  23. Anon,

$40 per hour out of court
    $50 per hour in court
    $300 cap

Hope to be able to afford a “private” mouth piece.

  24. Saw the DeVine promotional flier yesterday! ‘Tis a dandy! Tells much! Right-on!

  25. Devine would do a great job. Someone with common sense in government. What a great idea!

  26. I seen on Devine’s web site that he list 7 attorneys, 5 clerks and 1 investigator working for the Seneca county prosecutors office. I understand there are 2 investigators working there. Ron Green and Jeff Huffman who is handling support cases. I

  27. Only two? Where do the claims of “Dr. Jeff” fit-in? When he was campaigning for JUDGE, he advised that he was part of Joooooonier’s staff?

  28. Well 3-4 months ago Huffman was openly bragging about working there as a investigator. He was even handing out his business cards that clearly identified him as a staff/investigator. It fits in because it seems that this hire was on the sly and kept quiet. Devine compared the stats on his web site showing the seneca county pros office is way over staffed compared to other surrounding offices. It seems this stat is even higher if Huffman is working there.

  29. The information provided for Derek’s website identified Huffman listed as an attorney, instead of an investigatior. The website has been corrected.

Stockner is counted as an attorney in the total attorney count.

  30. whostheboss
Huffman isnt working there get it right.

  31. Whostheboss-

If you have read the AT lately it stated that Huffman’s position was eliminated d/t lack of funding. It is to be reinstated soon though as the State has agreed to reimburse a large portion of his wages. I also believe the paper said that he has recovered another large portion of his salary through the cases he has handled.

Also, I have had professional contact with Investigator Huffman from the time he was initially hired and there seemed to be nothing “sly” about his hiring. He was out working his cases and not trying to keep anything quiet from what I could see and from what I can tell by comments from the numerous people that he has helped. He was quite visible I am told not stealthy.

Perhaps to you doing your job is bragging?

  32. My problem is that Egbert has for YEARS been totally blind to helping collect child support. He didn’t give two hoots about helping. NOW that is is ELECTION TIME, Egbert suddenly finds the ability to collect child support. I might also point out that he hired an officer from Fostoria, which is a not-so-subtle way to garner votes.

  33. I’ve only ever heard of ONE child support case being taken to court…and that is on the doorstep of the election. What a putrid record!

  34. Now I have it. Egbert doesn’t like Davoli or McQuire. Davoli won re-election, McQuire retained job.

From the 05-MAY-07 Toledo Blade, Jennifer Feehan :
    http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-30694971_ITM

“Four Fostoria police officers who claim they were denied the opportunity to seek the chief’s job lost their bid to have the Third District Court of Appeals oust Fostoria Police Chief John McGuire.

The Lima-based court this week dismissed a petition seeking the chief’s ouster and an order commanding the city and its civil service commission to offer a competitive promotional examination to fill the post.

The petition had been filed by Capt. James Dieter, Capt. William Brenner, and Patrol Officers Clayton Moore and Jeff Huffman, who claimed that because the city hired Mr. McGuire without holding…”

Whoops, there I go being cynical again.

  35. Is cynicism a sin, or are only sinners cynical?

  36. I believe we all sin, but I try to keep mine down to the genre’ of - “Of course I love your mother’s meatloaf, or Who doesn’t love watching WWF!’

  37. WinDixie and blackout: Sorry I don’t read the AT so I didn’t know he was no longer employed there.

  38. Scout, I see you’re pointing out some interesting facts. Well think about this one.. How can someone (not going to mention a name) take a disability retirement from a law enforcement agency then go back to work for another place in a similar position that you’re disabled from? Sounds like a conflict to me. I went on the Ohio police and fire web site and looked up the requirements for a disability pension. It clearly says you cannot work as a police or firefighter OR a similar position or you can loose your disabilty retirment. If you’re permently and totally disabled you cannot work at all. Food for thought. ;)

  39. Blackout, What I was pointing out was the fact that Huffman wasn’t listed as a investigator on the Seneca County Pros web site. He worked there for some time and they did not list him. So I was saying that looked like they were being sly about his hiring. If this was a oversite I stand corrected.

  40. Whostheboss - He left the Tiffin PD on a disability retirement? Are you positive?

  41. He didn’t work for Tiffin PD. He worked for Fostoria PD.

  42. Just to keep the thread clear. Investigator Ron Green retired from Tiffin PD and Investigator Jeff Huffman retired from Fostoria PD right? Both are double dipping and collecting pensions from Ohio Police and fire AND working and collecting pay from Egbert. You can retire and work elsewhere as a investigator UNLESS your on disability retirement. Then your prohibited from working for any police and fire department AND any similar job defind by the ORC and rules of OP&F. At least thats how I interpet what I read from Ohio Police and fires web site.

  43. I was asking about Green retiring on a disability retirement from Tiffin PD. Is it correct that both Green and Huffman retired on disability?

  44. Scout639-No, I don’t think green retired on disability. He retired after the required years of service.

  45. I misunderstood your original post. So how is it Huffman was able to get disability and work for Egbert? Maybe Egbert will hire a Special Prosecutor to see if that is a conflict :-)

  46. Scout: If I recall correctly, I sinned once in either ‘65 or ‘65. Since then, I’ve been basically perfect.

  47. Cedrec - This is an often said line from my father “Last year I only had fault, but I worked really hard, and this year I am perfect.” Brilliant minds often work along the same veins.
